Our Research

We study diverse ecosystems worldwide to protect species, restore natural resources, and create sustainable solutions.

Freshwater

We tackle global water challenges—from pollution to insecurity—leading restoration efforts from the Everglades to Africa for over 40 years.

Land & Biodiversity

Our scientists unite research and conservation to tackle species loss and restore ecosystems—from tropical forests to urban green spaces.

Cross-Cutting Innovation

Ecology, engineering, data science, and policy—united for innovative environmental solutions.

Coastlines & Oceans

From coral reefs to rising seas, our research drives solutions to sustain marine ecosystems and build climate resilience worldwide.

Featured Projects

The FISHSCAPE Project studies how reef fish use seagrass habitats in the Florida Keys to better inform marine sanctuary management.

FIU’s Water Quality Monitoring Network tracks coastal water conditions across South Florida to support ecosystem health and management.

The FCE LTER program at FIU is one of only 27 NSF-funded long-term ecological research sites in the U.S., with 25 years of groundbreaking science driving Everglades restoration and coastal resilience.

Global FinPrint is the world’s largest coral‑reef shark and ray census. Launched in 2015 by FIU with support from the Paul G. Allen Foundation, it uses baited underwater video surveys in over 400 reefs across 58 countries to map populations, guide conservation efforts, and support shark protection policies globally .

Spaces that Inspire. Teams that Drive Change.

Discover the cutting-edge facilities and collaborative research groups addressing today’s critical environmental challenges.

Facilities

Our facilities span coastal labs, greenhouses, field stations, and more—providing the tools and environments researchers need to lead transformative science. These spaces support hands-on education, innovation, and collaboration across disciplines.

Research Groups

Our research groups bring together scientists, students, and community partners to address complex issues—from climate change and water security to biodiversity and ecosystem health. Each group brings unique expertise and a shared commitment to solutions.
